How I Met Your Father: The Phone Call

So, where were we? Ah, yes. The end of my senior year...

I had just decided that I was going to go to Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches to "get out of Gunter"(not sure what went wrong there). I was newly single and really feeling my oats, so to speak. Even though my brother is several years younger than me, he had some cool friends and they were always around so I started hanging out with them. I was beginning to take a shine to a certain cutie in the group. It just so happened that--you guessed it--he was the guy from the basketball game. He was really cute and getting cuter by the day. A sweet guy. Christian. All the important things. He just, well, it's just that he didn't Kind of a problem, but I chose to overlook it. It's not like we were getting married or anything.

It was no secret that I had designs on him. I told my mom and my brother and they both thought I was crazy. I will never forget both of them telling me that he really didn't seem that interested in me. Well, that just ticked me off. Of course he was interested! I would prove it.

Prom was just around the corner. The guy was a year younger than me so we were both going to prom that year. I knew he wouldn't ask me on his own. (Remember what I said about the talking?) Well...anyway, I knew I had to devise a plan to get him to take me. Here's the unmatched brilliance of my brain: I just went ahead and started telling people that he was taking me to the prom. I know, I know. PSY-CHO! But honestly, it just seemed like the best thing to do at the time. As the weeks went by and prom was getting closer and closer, I was beginning to panic. Somehow I had to let him know that he was taking me to prom. HA!

Finally the night came when I knew it had to happen. I had to tell my prom date that he was in fact my prom date. I will NEVER forget that night. I was staying over at my friend Jill's house. We were sitting on her parents' bed (don't ask me why). I was clutching the phone, so nervous I was shaking. And the giggling! Oh! The giggling...I tried so many times but I just couldn't muster up the courage to dial. So, I decided to do what any deranged and determined, love-struck, teenage girl would do in this situation. I went a-stalking. Um, yeah. I actually had her drive me past his house to see if his (awesome) white Grand Am was in the drive way. It was. So we returned to the bed. Phone back in my hand. This was it. I took a deep breath and dialed the number. 9-0-3-4-3-3-4-6-8-(looooooooong pause with giggling and nausea) 5!

*Beep*Beep*Beep*Beep*Beep* Ahhh! You have got to be kidding me! I hung up, then immediately picked it back up and pressed redial. Thinking, of course, that it would still be busy. Nope. This time it was ringing. Once, twice, "Hello?" It was him. OH-MY-GOSH.
