Playroom Makeover

This is what our little playroom looks like. On a good day. It was one place in the house that didn't get completely finished before we moved in a couple years ago. "Well just have to finish it after we move in..."

Famous last words, right?

My goals are:
  • reduce toys by 50%
  • create more storage
  • make "childproof" for Glory
  • decor on walls
  • install some type of window blinds or shade
  • finish the toy box seat (which is actually used for Christmas decor)

Here is a close-up of the seat. Some of the ideas I have toyed with are:

  • adding padding and fabric to the front to make it a cushiony back rest.
  • painting it with magnetic paint so it is a big magnetic board.
  • covering in felt for a felt board (does anyone ever use those anymore, though?)
  • chalkboard paint, though I feel I am beginning to go a little over board with that.

I know I am going to make a seat cushion for the top of the bench. My challenge is to do all of this and limit purchases to fabric and one type of paint. Do you think I can do it?

I would really love to hear your great ideas! Bring 'em on!

Just look at that big, blank, beautifully blue wall. It is just asking for some stuff to be nailed to it...

Hopefully I can post this next Thursday! We'll see.

  1. Great space!

Peg boards, magnetic boards covered in fabric.

Hooks for bags of ready-to-go toys for outings.

Good luck! I can't wait to see the finished product!

  3. Hi Keelie,

I like the idea of the seat cushion-a great reading spot. Maybe you could get a couple of those things that they lean against to read in bed (can't remember what they're called), and then the magnetic stuff around the bottom. In our loft we have a white-board that is also magnetic, and having a nice low-level one would allow her to play magnets on it. So, yeh, something magnetic. Have fun....when you're done, come on over as there's plenty to do here too. Have a great time and I KNOW we'll get to see the results!!!

  4. Thanks for stopping by my blog! Since we are also in the midst of a playroom makeover this is pretty exciting to me! *smiles*

I would go with the seat cushion and then magnetic paint under the chalk board paint. I think that for young ones chalk is so much cleaner than dry erase markers. Although I love dry erase boards as well...It' just with the younger kids they may decide that all walls are washable.

I can't wait to see the finished room!

  6. Don't...I repeat DO NOT paint with lots of chalkboard paint. You will have an unbelievable amount of dust to clean up everytime it is wiped off. I had an entire wall that was chalkboard and it was such a mess!!!
